Epilogue – based on the teleplay “Edge of Evil” by Ron Bishop and story by John Rosser & Dan Ullman

(There is a buckboard stuffed with farming equipment in the Sherman ranch yard. JESS HARPER and SLIM SHERMAN are tying down the equipment. Inside the ranch house, STEDE and ANN RHODES are just finishing eating breakfast.)

DAISY COOPER: Let me get you some more.

STEDE RHODES: Oh, no, ma’am. Not me. I’m stuffed tighter than a glacier.

ANN RHODES: You know, you’re goin’ to have to give me some of your recipes, Mrs. Cooper. I’ve never known him to eat that much.

DAISY COOPER: Oh, it seems to me someone around here keeps talkin’ about squirrel stew.

ANN RHODES: Oh, well, I’m afraid Jess was just starving that night.

DAISY COOPER: (Laughs)

(MIKE WILLIAMS appears in the ranch house doorway.)

MIKE WILLIAMS: Jess and Slim says to tell you the things is ready, Aunt Daisy.

DAISY COOPER: “ARE,” Mike.

MIKE WILLIAMS: T’ain’t “OURS”, Aunt Daisy, It’s “THEIRS.”  That’s the whole idea. (Leaves, closing door behind him.)

(STEDE and ANN RHODES get up and, with DAISY COOPER, head for the door.)

DAISY COOPER: You will come and see us soon. Promise.

ANN RHODES: Oh, we promise. (Hugs DAISY) and thank you.

STEDE RHODES: Thanks don’t say nearly enough, Miss Cooper.

DAISY COOPER: Oh!

(They go out into the yard.)

STEDE RHODES: I thought you said it was all old rusty equipment that you couldn’t use anymore. That stuff’s brand new.

JESS HARPER: The Lewis brothers wouldn’t have it any other way.

STEDE RHODES: Aw, but Jess, you had a lot more to do with …

JESS HARPER: Stede, if it hadn’t a been for you, I’da had six feet of dirt in my ears right now.

SLIM SHERMAN: You know, an’ those two miners bought fifty head of cattle. We’ll start running them up tomorrow. (Looks at wagon) Stede, do ya think ya can handle those lines.

STEDE RHODES: Yeah, think I can manage.

MIKE WILLIAMS: (Sitting on the buckboard)

ANN RHODES: (Gazes at the buckboard in wonderment. She stops in front of Mike and turns back to Jess. She hugs him and gives him a kiss on the lips.)

MIKE WILLIAMS: (Grins)

ANN RHODES: Thanks, Jess. (Gets up on the wagon.)

(MIKE WILLIAMS keeps watching JESS HARPER, smiling. MIKE WILLIAMS hops down from the wagon. STEDE and ANN RHODES drive off . ANN RHODES waves goodbye. DAISY COOPER waves. JESS HARPER leans against the hitching rail, smiling. MIKE WILLIAMS leans against the porch post.)

MIKE WILLIAMS: There’s some things ladies can do that I didn’t know they can do, Aunt Daisy.

DAISY COOPER: What’s that, Mike?

MIKE WILLIAMS: They can kiss a man and he’ll smile for hours.

DAISY COOPER: (Looks from MIKE WILLIAMS to JESS HARPER)

JESS HARPER: (What MIKE WILLIAMS has just said finally sinks in with JESS HARPER) Why you little..

(MIKE WILLIAMS takes off running. JESS HARPER chases MIKE WILLIAMS to the corral. MIKE WILLIAMS rolls under the fence as JESS HARPER jumps over it and tackles him. SLIM SHERMAN and DAISY COOPER laugh.)
