Epilogue – based on the script “No Place to Run” by David Lang

(JESS HARPER and SLIM SHERMAN are patching the barn roof at the Sherman ranch.)

JESS HARPER: Dad gum! We shoulda had Gandy do this when he was working for us.

SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah. I can think of fifty things I’d have him do. Think there’s a chance of puttin’ him back on?

JESS HARPER: Well, I don’t know. If he and Amy get things straighten out in Granite City, they promised they’d come by and see us.

SLIM SHERMAN: D’ya think there’s a chance of him serving more time?

JESS HARPER: Aw, I don’t think so. Slim The law was so glad to get what was left of the Wellman gang I think Gandy and Amy will be put on probation. (Begins hammering again and then stops.) Man, it’s hot. It’s nice up at the lake about now.

SLIM SHERMAN: I was thinkin’ the same thing.

JESS HARPER: Yeah?

SLIM SHERMAN: Oh, we could finish this later. Tomorrow, huh!

JESS HARPER: What are we waiting for?

(SLIM SHERMAN and JESS HARPER start to get up, only to see the ladder disappear.)

SLIM SHERMAN: Hey, what’s going on?

DAISY COOPER: Mike and I need the ladder, Slim. Let us know when you’re all finished and we’ll put it back up.

MIKE WILLIAMS: Wasn’t my idea, Slim.

SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah, we’ll get it done, Daisy.

DAISY COOPER: You’ll be glad when the rains come.

MIKE WILLIAMS: What are we going to do with the ladder?

DAISY COOPER: I wouldn’t worry about that, Mike. I’ve been trying to get the boys to patch this barn roof for two months. They won’t be much longer. Then we’ll put it back up and you can all go swimming.

MIKE WILLIAMS: Hey, Slim! Hurry up. Then we can all go swimming!

JESS HARPER: Who wants to go swimming at midnight.

(SLIM SHERMAN and JESS HARPER reluctantly go back to work on the roof.)
