Steps

  1. Allow lemons to come to room temperature.
  2. Roll each lemon on a hard surface, pressing firmly until the lemon feels soft. The amount of time will vary with the size of the lemon.
  3. Place sugar in a clean quart jar.
  4. Cut whole lemons into thin slices. Remove pips.
  5. Place lemon slices in the bottom of the quart jar on top of the sugar.
  6. Muddle the lemon slices with a wooden tamper/muddler/vegetable packer or wooden spoon until the slices release their juice and the sugar begins to dissolve.
  7. Add crushed ice.
  8. Add chilled water.
  9. Tightly screw lid onto quart jar.
  10. Shake until sugar dissolves.
  11. Add fresh lemon juice to the quart jar.
  12. Screw lid onto quart jar and shake again, vigorously.
  13. Pour lemonade through a strainer into glass to remove peel and pulp.
  14. Slice remaining whole lemon for garnish. Cut a slit in each slice and place a slice on the rim of each glass or float a few slices in the top of each glass.
  15. Serve.
