Epilogue – based on the script “Among the Missing” by Rod Peterson
(SLIM SHERMAN and JAMIE DAVIS are in the front room of the Sherman ranch house standing by the table. JESS HARPER is sitting in a chair beside the fireplace.)
SLIM SHERMAN: I still say you ought to think about stayin’ in Laramie. We could use another veterinarian and I think you’d like it.
JAMIE DAVIS: Oh, I’m sure I would, Slim. And I may be heading back this way. But right now all I can think about is all that new land west of here that I ain’t never seen yet. And Ole Jess here has ’bout convinced me that I can do most anything I want to if I set my mind to it.
JESS HARPER: That’s right Jamie. So long as you got sense enough to be scared of the same things I am.
(DAISY COOPER enters from the kitchen)
JAMIE DAVIS: You scared o’ what?
JESS HARPER: Well, ah, getting married and being left afoot.
DAISY COOPER: (Laughs) Jess only means that he hasn’t found the right girl yet. In other words, the one that will have him.
(JAMIE DAVIS laughs as DAISY COOPER hands him a paper bag.)
DAISY COOPER: Here’s your lunch, Jamie.
JAMIE DAVIS: Thank you. ma’am, An’ ah, well, I sure want to thank alla ya for your hospitality and everything else.
(SLIM SHERMAN hands JAMIE DAVIS his hat.)
JAMIE DAVIS: Thanks. Hey, where is, ah, Mike? Ah, I don’t want to leave without saying goodbye to him.
(JAMIE DAVIS, SLIM SHERMAN, DAISY COOPER and JESS HARPER all walk out the ranch house door.)
SLIM SHERMAN: Oh, he’s around someplace.
MIKE WILLIAMS: (Walks up when they get outside) Goodbye, Jamie. Good luck.
JAMIE DAVIS: Same to ya, little fella.
MIKE WILLIAMS: I thought maybe you’d might like to have a friend along. Come on, I’ll show ya.
(They all go to JAMIE DAVIS’ horse. There is a puppy in a bag on JAMIE DAVIS’ saddle.)
JAMIE DAVIS: Mike, are ya, are ya sure you want to part with him?
MIKE WILLIAMS: I know you’ll take good care of him and you know I’ve got five more like him in the barn.
JAMIE DAVIS: Thanks, Mike.
(JESS HARPER and SLIM SHERMAN help tie down the saddle bags and lunch on the horse.)
JESS HARPER: Whoa, there.
SLIM SHERMAN: Whoa.
JESS HARPER: Whoa.
JAMIE DAVIS: (Mounts the horse a little awkwardly) So long, everybody. You’ll be hearin’ from me.
(SLIM SHERMAN slaps JAMIE DAVIS’ horse on the rump to get him moving.)
