Epilogue – based on “The Long Road Back,” a teleplay by Albert Aley and story by John C. Champion

(SLIM SHERMAN is leaning against the hitching rail in front of the Sherman ranch house, reading a letter.)

DAISY COOPER: (Comes out the front door of the ranch house) Did the stage bring any mail?

SLIM SHERMAN: Umhmm! (Holds out a different letter to DAISY COOPER)

DAISY COOPER: Ah, thanks. Oh, good, that Christmas cover pattern that I’ve been waiting for.

(SLIM SHERMAN grins and laughs as he reads the letter.)

DAISY COOPER: (Teasingly) Well, that must be from a girl, the way you’re enjoying it.

SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah. Jinny Malone. She writes just the way she talks. Doesn’t use one word when ten will do.

DAISY COOPER: (Laughs) What happened about Virg?

SLIM SHERMAN: Got off easy. Yeah, she says that the judge gave him one year probation. He and Jinny are gettin’ married next month.

DAISY COOPER: Ah, that’s nice.

(MIKE WILLIAMS appears at the corner of the ranch house, pulling GLADYS. CLETUS MCBAIN follows.)

MIKE WILLIAMS: Get up there. Get up you ole mule. Get.

CLETUS MCBAIN: Now, now Mike. That ain’t no way to talk to handle a lady. Ya gotta sweet talk ’em. Like this. (Whispers in the GLADYS’ ear.)

(GLADYS begins to follow MIKE WILLIAMS in a sidewise pattern, protesting. DAISY COOPER and SLIM SHERMAN grin at each other and walk over to MIKE WILLIAMS and CLETUS MCBAIN.)

SLIM SHERMAN: What’s goin’ on, Cletus? Looks like ya got Gladys all packed up.

CLETUS MCBAIN: Oh, gotta get movin’ Slim. That mountain’s still out there. I ain’ta goin’ ta find it gettin’ fat on your vittles.

DAISY COOPER: (Laughs and hands CLETUS MCBAIN a large bag.) Well here, take this with you. You may get hungry on the trail.

CLETUS MCBAIN: Well thank you kindly, ma’am. Well Slim, thanks for puttin’ me up.

SLIM SHERMAN: Glad to have ya, Cletus.

CLETUS MCBAIN: Be seein’ ya. So long, boy. You be good.

MIKE WILIAMS: You bring me back a piece of your mountain.

CLETUS MCBAIN: I sure will.

SLIM SHERMAN: Good luck.

GLADYS: (Braying)

CLETUS MCBAIN: Come on. Gladys. Get movin’.

MIKE WILLIAMS: Sweet talk ‘er, Cletus.

(CLETUS MCBAIN whispers in GLADYS’ ear and she follows obediently behind him.)

MIKE WILLIAMS: So, what did ya say to her?

CLETUS MCBAIN: You really want a know?

MIKE WILLIAMS: Yeah!

CLETUS MCBAIN: I said, “You get movin’ or I’ll boot ya right outta your flea-bitten hide.”

(SLIM SHERMAN, MIKE  WILLIAMS and DAISY COOPER laugh and wave goodbye.)

SLIM SHERMAN: Goodbye.

(CLETUS MCBAIN waves as he leaves.)
