Dialogue/Figurative Language/Literary References/Quotes

Paul Brooks: I don’t know. Ice melts mighty fast in this climate.
Meaning: a cold romantic reception (the “cold shoulder”) can change quickly with the right encouragement.

This I did not prevent expences, for… A penny sav’d, is a penny got.” Edward Ravenscroft, Canterbury Guests, 1695

By the same proportion that a penny saved is a penny gained, the preserver of books is a Mate for the Compiler of them.” Thomas Fuller, The Histories of the Worthies of England, 1661

A penny spar’d is twice got.” George Herbert, Outlandish Proverbs, 1640

The Games People Play

Bret Maverick: The trip from Memphis to New Orleans cost $47, if you didn’t play poker. For me, the price was $2358. Ah, but I wasn’t discouraged when we docked at New Orleans. I still had the thousand dollar bill I kept for emergencies fastened in the lining of my coat with a safety pin. One week later, I still had the safety pin.

Bret Maverick: No thanks. No, when I play cards with somebody else’s money I treat it just like my own. Believe me, nothing is treated more tenderly than that.
