Dialogue/Figurative Language/Literary References/Quotes
Lee Hong Chang: It is said, “One cannot gather honey without risking the sting of bees.”
Bart: As the poet once said, “Faith can move mountains.”
“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Matthew 17:20, The Bible, KJV
Loftus B. Jaggers: Never saw a trout rise to the bait any faster.
Phoebe Albright: We have faith, the same faith that saved Jonah from the belly of the whale.

The Games People Play
Lee Hong Chang: You seem to be an exception to your Occidental rule, Mr. Maverick…He who is fortunate at cards is less fortunate at, uh, other endeavors.
Referencing the idiom, “Lucky at cards, unlucky at love.”
Adele Jaggers: …Poker’s a game. Games are for children.
Adele Jaggers: Investment bankers get to own lots of things, when they play their cards right…Lots of things.
Loftus Jaggers: Maverick, what if there were a game were a thousand times higher than we played for tonight. Would you be interested?
Bart Maverick: Depends on how much it would cost me to buy in.
Loftus Jaggers: Nothing, you’d have my backing. Game’s not too different from poker. With your gambling instinct, knowledge of human nature, you’d be a rich man in no time.
Bart Maverick: Does this game have any rules and a dealer?
Loftus Jaggers: It does. But until you’re familiar with them, I’ll deal. Fair enough?
Bart Maverick: Well, you have the deck, Mr. Jaggers.
Bart: What does selling short mean?
Loftus Jaggers: Selling shares you don’t hold at the market price.
Bart Maverick: But how; when you don’t have them to sell?
Loftus Jaggers: Ever bluff at poker? Bet on values you aren’t holding?
Bart Maverick: Now and then.
Loftus Jaggers: All right. Then let’s say I’ve received inside information that Mintland is going to have a big financial loss. So, instead of buying it at the market price, I start selling it.
Bart Maverick: But how can you sell it if you don’t own it?
Loftus Jaggers: I have ten days to deliver the stock I’ve sold. During those ten days the news leaks out, and the price drops.
Bart Maverick: Oh, so by the time you buy in, you do so at a much lower price than what you sold the stock for.
Loftus Jaggers: You’re getting it.
Bart Maverick: And the difference between 9 ½ and 6, I’m sorry, 5, that’s your profit?
Loftus Jaggers: Right
Bart Maverick: Mr. Jaggers, what would happen if your information was wrong? If Mintland went up.
Loftus Jaggers: Then I would have lost. Ever sandbag at poker?
Bart Maverick: Only when I think I can get away with it.
