John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, is credited with the creation of the sandwich. It should be mentioned that he was a compulsive gambler. His card game being more important than eating dinner, he requested two slices of bread filled with meat, which was then dubbed the ‘Sandwich.’
Sandwiches are often the entree for a picnic, bar food, or mid-day meal and are robust, filling, and usually accompanied by trimmings and condiments. As bread is an important staple of every day life, in sandwiches, it must be properly sliced thin (but not so thin as to be floppy) and buttered or covered with a condiment on both top and bottom inside.
