(ANDY SHERMAN, SLIM SHERMAN and MISS HANNAH are standing in front of MISS HANNAH’s ranch house. ANDY SHERMAN and SLIM SHERMAN are respectfully holding their hats in their hands.)

MISS HANNAH: I want to thank you for coming by.

SLIM SHERMAN: Well, Andy wanted to. He…He thought you’d like to know what happened.

ANDY SHERMAN: He was tryin’ to save my life.

MISS HANNAH: Poor Boone. Killed in a holdup he had nothing to do with for a change.

ANDY SHERMAN: Yes ma’am. All he could think about was gettin’ back here to you. It’s just bad luck that we were in town when those outlaws were tryin’ to rob the bank.

MISS HANNAH: I always thought that Boone would die on the wrong side of the law. It’s a comfort to know he didn’t.

SLIM SHERMAN: Well Andy, we’d better ride. Goodbye, ma’am.

MISS HANNAH: Goodbye, and thank you again.

(ANDY SHERMAN and SLIM SHERMAN mount their horses and leave. MISS HANNAH waves goodbye.)

ANDY SHERMAN: Slim, I didn’t feel right telling a lie. But I thought I should do it.

SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah, it’s hard to know what’s right at a time like this, Andy. A lie hurt you in the telling of it, but the truth might of killed her.

ANDY SHERMAN: That’s what I was afraid of.

SLIM SHERMAN: Good. Do ya think you can handle that horse well enough to get us home?

ANDY SHERMAN: I bet I can beat that nag of yours.

SLIM: (Patting his horses’s neck) That’s a bet you’re gonna lose, mister. Come on, boy.

(SLIM SHERMAN and ANDY SHERMAN race off.)
