Epilogue – based on the script “Badge of Glory” by George Slavin
(JESS HARPER comes in the front door of the Sherman ranch house, dressed for church.) DAISY COOPER is primping in front of a mirror on the fireplace mantle and MIKE WILLIAMS is rocking in a chair in the front room Both of them are also dressed for church.)
JESS HARPER: (Enters through ranch house front door, all dressed for church) Wagon’s all hitched and ready to go, Daisy. Where’s Slim?
DAISY COOPER: Should be almost ready. I woke him.
JESS HARPER: So did I, twice. I’ll bet you a dollar it didn’t take.
DAISY COOPER: (Laughs)
(JESS HARPER enters the bedroom. SLIM SHERMAN is lying in bed with the covers pulled all the way up. JESS HARPER reaches down to jostle him,)
JESS HARPER: Slim! It figures. Slim!
SLIM SHERMAN: What’s wrong?
JESS HARPER: The minute I turn my back on you, you go to sleep again. That’s what’s wrong. Now let’s get with it. Everybody’s ready to go to church. Fine example you’re setting for Mike.
SLIM SHERMAN: Is the team hitched up?
JESS HARPER: The teams all hitched up. Now come on.
SLIM SHERMAN: How ’bout the chickens. Are they fed?
JESS HARPER: (Agitated) I fed the chickens, I gathered the eggs and I curried the horses. What do you think I’ve been doing since 6 o’clock this morning? Getting everything ready. Now let’s go.
SLIM SHERMAN: Ya say the team’s hitched up, ‘n everything?
JESS HARPER: Yes, it’s all hitched.
SLIM SHERMAN: That’s real great of you, Jess. Real friendly like. (Pulls back the covers and gets up.) Well, come on. We don’t want to be late for church, do we? (SLIM SHERMAN is totally dressed except for his jacket which he puts on while whistling a few notes. SLIM SHERMAN smiles, claps JESS HARPER on the shoulder and walks out the door.)
JESS HARPER: (Looks down at the bed, frowns, then follows SLIM SHERMAN out, slamming the bedroom door shut behind him.)
