Epilogue – based upon the script “Bare Knuckles” by Donn Mullally & Lee Erwin
(SLIM SHERMAN looks at the new barn board that replaced the one that Terrible Terry Mulligan had made a hole in with his fist.)
SLIM SHERMAN: And that was the end of it. Last time I saw Jonesy he was racing three or four hundred people to a gold field.
JESS HARPER: Why’d you let him go? That’s what you went to War Bonnet for, wasn’t it? To bring him back.
SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah, but I couldn’ta got him back unless I picked him up and carried him.
ANDY SHERMAN: Well maybe you shoulda done just that.
SLIM SHERMAN: Wouldn’t be fair to him, Andy. Jonesy’s still tryin’ to help. That’s all any man can do.
(A horse whinny is heard.)
ANDY SHERMAN: Hey, look what’s comin’.
(The Terry Mulligan coach drives into the yard. SLIM SHERMAN, ANDY SHERMAN, and JESS HARPER stride over to it.)
SLIM SHERMAN: Alright, Mulligan, get outta there. I been savin’ something for you. (SLIM SHERMAN pulls back the curtain. JONESY is inside.)
JONESY: Howdy, one and all.
SLIM: Jonesy!
JONESY: Slim! There’s the money for the bank note. Better count it.
SLIM: Where’d ya get all this?
JONESY: Same place I got this rig and the driver. From Brad Hovey and Terry Mulligan. I figure Andy and me can, ah, paint her up ‘n sell her. Oughta bring about as much as a…
JESS HARPER: Jonesy?
JONESY: Yeah?
JESS HARPER: How’d ya do it?
JONESY: Easy as pie. I sold ’em my gold claim up there in Tommyhawk Gulch.
SLIM SHERMAN: I thought that claim was worthless.
JONESY: It is worthless. But I couldn’t get them to believe it. Why that Brad Hovey just kept raising his offer. OH-h-h, they’ve got the gold fever bad. Well, it got to lookin’ like they just couldn’t be happy unless they owned my claim. Ha! And you know the kind I am, I just like to see people happy. Ha, ha!. Well, well. (JONESY gets down out of the coach.) Come on, Andy.
(They all enter the ranch house.)
