Epilogue – based on the teleplay “Naked Steel” by Donald S. Sanford and story by John C. Champion
(DAISY COOPER rings the triangle dinner bell on the Sherman ranch house porch. JESS HARPER and SLIM SHERMAN come to the porch from the ranch yard. MIKE WILLIAM runs out of the kitchen door.)
MIKE WILLIAMS: Slim, a letter came for ya this morning.
SLIM SHERMAN: Well. you don’t say?
MIKE WILLIAMS: It’s from Riverton. Looks important. Can I get it for ya?
SLIM SHERMAN: Well, if you think it can’t wait.
(MIKE WILLIAMS runs into the ranch house.)
DAISY COOPER: (Chortles) He can’t stand an unopened letter.
JESS HARPER: Yeah, well, I’m kinda partial to a mystery myself, Daisy. What d’ya figure it is? (Rubs SLIM SHERMAN’s shoulder) Maybe some pretty little gal Slim’s been deceiving.
SLIM SHERMAN: (Slaps JESS HARPER in the ribs)
MIKE WILLIAMS: (Reappearing) It’s from a bank. (Hands SLIM SHERMAN the envelope)
SLIM SHERMAN: Bank? (Opens the letter and unfolds it. He looks puzzled.)
MIKE WILLIAMS: What’s it say?
DAISY COOPER: Mike, that is a private matter.
SLIM SHERMAN: Well, it seems that Marshal Tate didn’t have any kin. The reward money that would go to him, comes to me.
MIKE WILLIAMS: Wow-ee! How much?
DAISY COOPER: Mike! It isn’t polite to pry.
MIKE WILLIAMS: Well I was only pryin’ a little.
(SLIM SHERMAN hands DAISY COOPER the check)
DAISY COOPER: My goodness!
SLIM SHERMAN: Daisy, would you see that the Patton family gets that. You’ll know how to do it so it doesn’t hurt their pride. That oughta see them through ’til next fall.
DAISY COOPER: That’s very generous of you, Slim.
JESS HARPER: Getting kinda liberal about giving your money away, aren’t ya pard?
DAISY COOPER: Ah, a gift from the heart has a way of coming back.
JESS HARPER: Maybe so, Daisy…
SLIM SHERMAN: I’ll flip ya for it, pard. You know, before I left I bet you five dollars that that new corral fence wouldn’t be up. Forgot about it, huh?
JESS HARPER: Forgot, I was too blame busy….
SLIM SHERMAN: Just the same, it’s not up. (Snaps his fingers and puts out his hand, palm up.)
JESS HARPER: (Looks at SLIM SHERMAN with disgust)
SLIM SHERMAN: Look at that face, Daisy.
DAISY COOPER: Um… hmm. (Laughs)
(JESS HARPER slaps a five dollar bill into SLIM SHERMAN’s hand.)
SLIM SHERMAN: Thank you.
DAISY COOPER: Come on, dinner’s getting cold.
(SLIM SHERMAN pats MIKE WILLIAMS on the posterior as all go in through the kitchen door.)
