Epilogue – based on the teleplay “Shadow of the Past” by David Lang & Dan Ullman and story by David Lang
(BEN MCKETTERICK is sitting on a buckboard in the Sherman ranch yard. JESS HARPER is loading luggage in the buckboard.)
BEN MCKETTERICK: Well, it’s sure not easy to leave.
JESS HARPER: You don’t have to, Ben. Plenty of farmland around here for you and Francie to settle on.
BEN MCKETTERICK: Yeah, I know. But, Francie’s got her heart set on the west coast and I do too. I think it’s better for both of us to get as far away from my troubles as we can.
JESS HARPER: Up to you. You can still do what the people around here want you to. Change your name. We’ll put up a headstone. Outside of a few people who wouldn’t say anything, nobody’d know.
BEN MCKETTERICK: Well, it sure was nice of them to offer. But I’m Ben McKitterick and I’m gonna stay that way. Trouble comes, I’ll meet it on it’s own terms. You know somethin’, Jess. I think you’d do the same thing in my place.
(JESS HARPER looks sad and looks to the doorway as FRANCIE MCKETTERICK, DAISY COOPER, MIKE WILLIAMS and SLIM SHERMAN come out.)
FRANCIE MCKETTERICK: (Hugs DAISY COOPER) Thank you, Daisy.
SLIM SHERMAN: (Kisses FRANCIE MCKETTERICK)
FRANCIE MCKETTERICK: Bye bye, Mike
MIKE WILLIAMS: Bye, Francie.
SLIM SHERMAN: Bye, Francie.
FRANCIE MCKETTERICK: (Walks over to JESS HARPER) Probably won’t ever write. Will you come and see us?
JESS HARPER: Well now, I don’t know, a place might fall apart without me here to run it.
SLIM SHERMAN: (Looks at DAISY COOPER and then leans toward FRANCIE MCKETTERICK) Francie, you can have him any time you want him. Now too soon?
JESS HARPER and FRANCIE MCKETTERICK: (Laugh)
FRANCIE MCKETTERICK: No, I think I’m gonna wait. He can come visit his nephew, maybe even his neice.
JESS HARPER: Well, tell ya’ one thing, if you’re going to make me an uncle, you’re not goin to do it by standing around here. (Hugs FRANCIE MCKETTERICK)
FRANCIE MCKETTERICK: (Raises her arm for BEN MCKETTERICK to help her into the wagon. Climbs up alongside BEN MCKETTERICK.) Let’s go, Ben.
BEN MCKETTERICK: (Shakes JESS HARPER’s hand) So long, Jess.
JESS HARPER: So long, Ben.
BEN MCKETTERICK: Let’s go.
(The buckboard moves out of the ranch yard. FRANCIE MCKETTERICK waves, JESS HARPER waves. DAISY COOPER, MIKE WILLIAMS and SLIM SHERMAN wave as JESS HARPER walks forward, watching BEN and FRANCIE MCKETTERICK leave.)
