Epilogue – based on the teleplay by Rod Peterson and story by John C. Champion
(JESS HARPER comes through the barn door and inspects the corral gate that Slim is repairing. JESS HARPER then tests the gate.)
JESS HARPER: Well, it’s not as good as I could do. But I guess it’ll work. Place sure did run down in a hurry, heh?
SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah, what did you expect? You out with the cavalry putting down uprisings, me building roads.
JESS HARPER: Hey, that reminds me. You got a chuck hole out there needs fixin’. Since you’re the big road builder around here, uh, you go out and fill it in ‘fore we bust an axle.
SLIM SHERMAN: You don’t, uh, you don’t seem to understand about experts, Jess. You see, they boss jobs.
JESS HARPER: What do you mean?
SLIM SHERMAN: Here. (Hands JESS HARPER a shovel)
JESS HARPER: What am I going to do with this?
SLIM SHERMAN: I’ll tell you what you can do with it.
(JESS HARPER and SLIM SHERMAN smile at each other for a moment and then turn towards the road. SLIM SHERMAN pats JESS HARPER on the back.)
SLIM SHERMAN: Come on, old buddy.
