Epilogue – based on the teleplay by Ron Bishop and story by Dan Ullman
(SARAH HODDING, DAISY COOPER, PETER HODDING, JESS HARPER and MIKE WILLIAMS come out of the Sherman ranch house onto the front porch.)
SARAH HODDING: It was very nice of you to share your Sunday supper with us, Mrs. Cooper.
DAISY COOPER: Oh, we enjoyed having you. I hope you and Peter will have a safe trip. Write to us soon.
SARAH HODDING: Thank you. We will.
JESS HARPER: I wish you’d listen, Sarah. Oregon’s a long was off with the little you’ve got to go on.
SARAH HODDING: I know, Jess. I suppose we’re foolish but, we’ve talked it over.
PETER HODDING: We figure’d we couldn’t go back to the cabin to stay. So what it amounts to, Jess.
JESS HARPER: I reckon I understand.
SARAH HODDING: Jess, our wagon is gone!
JESS HARPER: Well, so it is.
SARAH HODDING: Well, our wagon. That’s all we have in the world, Jess. (Starts off the porch)
(DAISY COOPER catches SARAH HODDING and JESS HARPER takes hold of SARAH HODDING’s arm.)
JESS HARPER: I wouldn’t say that, Sarah.
(DAISY COOPER, JESS HARPER and SARAH HODDING look the opposite direction as they hear the sound of an approaching Conestoga wagon. SLIM SHERMAN is driving and JIM TENNEY is aboard.)
SLIM SHERMAN: Whoa. (Steps down on the horse’s back quarters) Easy boy.
SARAH HODDING: I don’t understand.
SLIM SHERMAN: Well, the, ah, new wagon was Marshall Tenney’s idea. And….well, Jess and I talked to the stage line into donatin’ those horses.
SARAH HODDING: But why?
JIM TENNEY: Well ma’am, if that money hadn’t been recovered I’d be back to skinnin’ mules.
DAISY COOPER: And Sarah, besides all your personal belongings in there, there’s everything you could possibly want on the trip.
MIKE WILLIAMS: Includin’ a dog for Pete. (HOUND barks.)
JESS HARPER: Plus a thousand dollar reward. (Hands SARAH HODDING an envelope)
SARAH HODDING: Wha’. .. Oh, Jess, you were the one that…
JIM TENNEY: Now Jess tells it differently. If it hadn’t been for your son here, Murkland might never have been taken. We’re real proud a’ you, boy.
SARAH HODDING: (Looks around) Oh, I don’t know what to say.
JESS HARPER: Well, there’s nothin’ left to say, ‘cept goodbye. If it sounds like we’re hurryin’ you a little, we are. See there’s a wagon train coming to the forks in a couple minutes. We arranged for you to go along with ’em.
(SARAH HODDING impulsively grabs JESS HARPER by the cheeks and kisses him soundly. HOUND barks. SLIM SHERMAN claps JESS HARPER on the back. PETER and SARAH HODDING get into the wagon. They leave, with PETER HODDING and the dog watching from the back. PETER HODDING waves and JIM TENNEY, SLIM SHERMAN, JESS HARPER, DAISY COOPER and MIKE WILLIAMS wave back.)
