Epilogue – based on “The Legend of Lily,” a teleplay by Kathleen Hite
(LILY and BEA exit the Laramie hotel midst applause from a gathering of townspeople. JIM helps them into the coach. JIM puts luggage on top of the coach and climbs into the driver’s seat. SHANGHAI and his drovers ride up.)
SHANGHAI: Hold it! Hold it! I got somethin’ to say. (SHANGHAI dismounts and walks to the coach.)
LILY: I think you’ve said more than enough already.
SHANGHAI: I know. I’ve got it comin’ to me.
LILY: How’d you get out of jail? Kill the sheriff?
SHANGHAI: Well, I did what any old gray-haired horse would do. I paid my fine, bought a new saloon for the barkeep. If I got any nicer they’d want me to stay on as town parson.
LILY: (Smiles and shakes her head) I never was one to hold a grudge. (Offers her hand) Where you headin,’ Shanghai?
SHANGHAI: Wherever your goin’. I brought you in here with an honor escort and I’d like to see you safely to wherever you’re bound.
LILY: Well now, no self-respecting woman could refuse such gallantry.
SHANGHAI: Just one thing, Miss Lily.
LILY: What’s that.
SHANGHAI: Make it a long trip, will ya? (SHANGHAI mounts his horse.) Come on, boys.
JIM: Ha! Ha! Ha!
(SHANGHAI’s men escort the coach out of town. As the coach passes, LILY throws JONESY a kiss. JONESY tips his hat. SLIM SHERMAN looks with amusement at JONESY and JESS HARPER shakes his head negatively. Contritely, JONESY waves goodbye.)
BEN CARSON: (Suspended from a rope at the Laramie blacksmith shop.) Help! Help!
(SHANGHAI shoots the rope and down BEN CARSON falls into a water trough.)
SHANGHAI: (Laughs heartily) Hee! Hee! Hee! Ha! Ha! Ho! Ho! (Canters after the coach.)
