Epilogue – based on “The Protectors,” a teleplay by Donn Mullally & Lee Erwin and story by Oliver Drake & Al Martin
(ANDY SHERMAN, JESS HARPER, and SLIM SHERMAN are in the front room of the Sherman ranch house. ANDY SHERMAN is writing a letter at the table, SLIM SHERMAN is reading, and JESS HARPER is resting on a chair in front of the fireplace.)
ANDY SHERMAN: Jess, how do you spell “sodbuster?
JESS HARPER: S-O-D-B-U
SLIM SHERMAN: No, Jess, it’s two words. You know, with that thing-a-ma-jig in the middle.
JESS HARPER: You mean a hypher.
ANDY SHERMAN: No. That’s a cow.
JESS HARPER: No, a heifer’s a cow.
ANDY SHERMAN: Well, that’s what I just said.
JESS HARPER: Well, isn’t a hypher somethin’ different?
SLIM SHERMAN: It sure is, and the word’s hyphen. Pick another word, Andy.
ANDY SHERMAN: Well you told me I couldn’t use “nester.” Now the trouble’s all settled, said it wasn’t right.
SLIM SHERMAN: So?
ANDY SHERMAN: So, I gotta call ’em something. How else will Jonesy know that I’m talking about?
SLIM SHERMAN: There’s a lot of things you can call ’em. Like, umm…use sodbuster.
ANDY SHERMAN: Sure: How do you spell it?
JESS HARPER: I forget.
ANDY SHERMAN: (Slams pencil down on top of the paper) Writin’ letters is too hard. Guess I’ll wait till Jonesy gets back and tell him about it. (Tears off the letter.)
