Epilogue – based on “The Runaway,” a script by Meyer Dolinsky
(BILL WATKINS is looking for something on the floor by the general store counter.)
EZRA WATKINS: Oh, would ya look what they done to my store.
JESS HARPER: You’re lucky you’re alive, Ezra. That oughta count for somethin’.
EZRA WATKINS: (Leans over the counter to talk to BILL) What d’ya lookin’ for?
BILL WATKINS: (Pulls out Ben Franklin’s Almanac) Here it is, Mrs. Cooper. (Offers the book to DAISY COOPER.)
DAISY COOPER: I told you it was a present and I meant it.
BILL WATKINS: Thank you, ma’am. (Reads from the book) “Experience is an expensive school, but a fool can learn in no other.”
EZRA WATKINS: Did you just read that? I swear? What’s it mean?
BILL WATKINS: It means ya’ gotta kick some people in the head to learn ’em anything.
JESS HARPER: (Looks at DAISY COOPER and then moves towards BILL WATKINS) I was that kind of a fool today, Bill.
BILL WATKINS: So was I, Jess. (Offers JESS HARPER his hand)
(JESS HARPER and BILL WATKINS shake hands warmly.)
