Epilogue – based on “The Runt,” a teleplay by Raphael Heyes & Rod Peterson and story by Leon Schotter & John C. Champion
(JESS HARPER is cutting kindling in the Catlin’s ranch yard. SLIM SHERMAN is adding to a stack of cut wood he is carrying. MIKE WILIAMS comes around them carrying a galanized bucket of eggs.)
SLIM SHERMAN: Careful with those eggs, Mike. They’re not made of steel.
MIKE WILLIAMS: Ah, I won’t break ’em. (Addresses SANDY CATLIN) Got two more eggs than yesterday.
SANDY CATLIN: Well, you’re doing a lot better than Marcy and me ever did. You take ’em on in to Mrs. Cooper now, huh?
MIKE WILLIAMS: Sure.
SANDY CATLIN: Havin’ Mike and Daisy here the last few days sure has helped out.
SLIM SHERMAN: That’s what neighbors are for.
SANDY CATLIN: I know, but you’ve done so much. The reward money paid off the loan. Left me enough to plant a new crop, too.
JESS HARPER: Ah, well you earned it, Sandy. The way you and Slim handled those three gunslingers, you got Sheriff Cory ’bout half scared to come back to the job.
SLIM SHERMAN: That’ s not what’s keepin’ him.
JESS HARPER: No? What is? I saw him the other day. He looked fit as a fiddle.
SLIM SHERMAN: It’s the mayor. Thinks we’ve got the worst looking jail in the territory and it’s gotta be painted.
JESS HARPER: Oh-h-h. I see. And you’re elected.
SLIM SHERMAN: Yeah. They’re gonna have to find me first.
(JESS HARPER pats SLIM SHERMAN on the back as SLIM SHERMAN heads into the ranch house. SANDY CATLIN and JESS HARPER smile before following him in.)
